Louisville Legion Post 353 and the Louisville Legion Auxiliary are proud to announce they will sponsor one high school junior boy and one junior girl to Cornhusker Boys' State and Cornhusker Girls' State. The programs run concurrently May 31 - June 6, 2020.
Boys' and Girls' State programs are held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus and at the Nebraska State Unicameral. Students from all over Nebraska come together, staying in the dorms on campus, learning from and with each other. The participants organize their own city, county and state governments and hold elections to the various offices. They argue their own bills in a legislature and mete out justice in their own courts.
At Boys' and Girls' State, the participants learn citizenship and civics in a non-partisan, full-immersion environment. Each student "learns to do by doing." Many students even get to meet their state senators.
Afternoons and evenings at Boys' and Girls' State allow for plenty of recreation time. Students can take part in competitive sports, music, chorus and newsletter staff are some of the options.
Students who participate in Boys' and Girls' State can use this experience on a college application to show a well-rounded high school experience. In order to apply for the Louisville American Legion Post 353 and Louisville American Legion Auxiliary sponsorships, please visit your high school guidance counselor or principal for the application form. They can guide you through the process.
In order to be eligible to apply, you must be a student who is a junior in high school. Home-schooled students are also encouraged to apply. You must also be available to go to Boys'/Girls' State. If you are selected and decide not to go after your registration is paid, you will be responsible to reimburse the Legion/Auxiliary for the forfeited fees paid on your behalf.
