On January 1, 2020, access to shop post commissaries and exchanges or even access post recreational facilities was expanded to newly eligible groups. "These new privileges recognize the service and sacrifice of these veterans and those that care for them," said A. T. Johnston, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Military Community and Family Policy. "If you or someone you know might be eligible for these privileges, share the message. Please help us ensure these veterans and caregivers receive the privileges they've been granted."
What are the new benefits being offered? You may be able to shop post commissaries and exchanges in person or online, utilize base golf courses, bowling alleys and movie theaters. You may also be able to access base recreational lodging, such as hotels and campgrounds.
Who is eligible? Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war, veterans with documented service-connected disabilities (rating 0-90%) and their designated caregivers.
How are you eligible? You should have a Veteran Health Identification Card. This means you should be enrolled with VA healthcare benefits.
Who can I contact to see if I'm eligible? Contact your local VA to ensure that you are eligible for healthcare benefits to obtain the card necessary to be able to make purchases.
You can also follow the links at exchangestores.com to see if you, as an honorably discharged veteran, can shop online with their stores with no base access.
